Dear Madm.

I was in hope of getting to Durham, would then have done my Self the pleasure of waiting upon you and your Son, Hope you had a satisfactory Acct. from Mr. Angus, I have advice that your workmen have in their working meet a Sump in Mr. Blacketts liberty lower than your level, wch. will confirm what I told Mr. Angus that the sills dipped that way & your level would be of no use, besides Sr. Walters people made a full trial. I mention this to hint the loss it is & may be to you if pursued. Wm. Teasdale might have known this, & ought to have explained it to Mr. Baker.

I shall not add more, shall when I am able to get to the mine you may hear from me , the Weather will not permit my crossing the moors, and a pain in the back part of my head, obliged me to take away twelve ounces of Blood yesterday.

Compts. to yourself & Son	Dr. Madm.

      Your most Obt. Servt.

      Jno.Westgarth

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
