									Unthank 8 March 1779

Sir

The delay in answering your letter of the 7 Ulto. was occasioned by the Lease your Father signed being at Sandoe. I am only one the <three> contracting party but have no right to give any of the money. You will please to peruse the Lease and you’ll find so long as you continue the Ingen you are to keep her, the Water courses &c in repair and so that none of our work be impeded. When the Race was suffered to run our works was stopped & your people obliged for want of wood to repair it, to take wood from us. We have no objection to your keeping her conformable to the Conditions spacified or in like manner to secure her on the terms in the Lease set forth. The above is the company’s Sentiments. Compts. to your good Mother

      Sir Your humble Servt.

      Jno Westgarth

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
