Mr. Thos. Emerson Newcastle 3rd January 1800

Newhouse Weardale

D[ea]r sir

My Lord Bishop of Durham, at Col[one]l Beaumonts request, having resigned to him the right of Purchasing the Land tax for Weardale mines &c. I have to request your getting a Certificate of the Amount of the Land tax paid for the Leadmines Lands &c. In Weardale from the Assessors of the respective Parish and returning by the first opportunity~Our Acco[un]t of Land tax does not agree with that of the Commiss[ion]ers at Durham, they having the Mines rated at £43.4. instead of £42.4. (the sum paid) and which they inform us they cannot correct without a Certificate from the Assessors. A part of the £45.17.4 mentioned by Mr. Mowbray we have not yet been able to make out. Killhope & Wellhope pays £1-18. Lands &c in Weardale <ditto> 12s/6d which makes only £44.14.6 instead of £47.17.4 p[er] Mr Mowbrays letter~If the Assessors know of any other Land tax pd. by Col Beaumont in Weardale desire they will include it in the Certificate~

      I am &c. JEB

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
