Mr. Thos. Emerson Jr. Newcastle 13th. Jany 1801

Newhouse Weardale,

Mr. Thos. Emerson

On the Complaint of the Lord Bishop of Durham’s Secretary, Mr. Emm agst. one of Coln Beaumont’s Workmen, John Bainbridge of Greenhead for not only destroying Game on the Moors of the Lord Bishop, but of the outragious Offence of shooting a Dog of the Bishop’s Gamekeeper, and making Use of violent Threats to the Person who hunted him, I desire that at the end of the Quarter John Bainbridge may be discharged from Coln. Beaumont’s Works, but should he not be engaged in a Bargain, let him be discharged immediately at the same time acquainting him and the rest of the Workmen with the Cause of your doing so; Complaints have likewise been made by Mr. Emm against the Workmen in general for destroying the Game, but particularly against the Woodmen, at & in the Neighbourhood of Wolsingham. – I desire that you will caution them against killing the Game on his Lordships Moors under the high Displeasure of Coln. Beaumt. It is in the Power of the Lord Bishop to punish these Offenders in a severe and exemplary Manner, but he rather inclines at this time of scarcety to reclaim the Offenders by gentle Means. – Let me know how you go on in Weardale.

      I am &c. J.E.B.

I have sent by Mr. Allgood a Book of Observations and Directions which Coln. & Mrs. Beaumont expect shall be strictly complied with by their several Agents. –
