October the 28 1742 Then agreed between William Archer of Sheale hill in the County of Cumberland of the one part, and Nicholas Emmerson for the right Reverend Edward Lord Bishop of Durham, and the Reverend Edmond Keene Rector of Stanhope of the other part that the said William Archer doth demesne and to farm Lett to the said right Reverend Lord Bishop and Edmond Keene One Moiety or full half part of all that his Lead Mill scituate at Blackhall in the County of Northumberland, and all the Offices and Work Tools of what Nature or kind soever, at and under the yearly Rent of Four pounds to be paid to him by the said right Reverend Lord Bishop and Edmond Keene for and during the Term of three years, and one Quarter the said Term to Commence on the [underscored: ‘7th day’] of January next Ensueing the said Reverend Father Lord Bishop and Edmond Keene to have Liberty to smelt all Quantities of Oar, at the said Mill which during the said Term shall be carried there by them or their agents without Molestation of the said William Archer and to have Liberty upon the Common to digg Win Lead and Carry away all manner of Peats and Turfs for the Smelting of the said Oar the Lord Bishop and Edmond Keene to pay an Equal proportion for all Damages of Bellows, and other Work Tools belonging to the said Mill which may happen after the Time they begin to smelt their Oar But if they do not make use of the said Mill not to be at any Expence about it, It is further agreed that the said Lord Bishop and the said Edmond Keene may dispose of their property in the said Mill to any person or persons during the said Term Provided He or they do not Smelt more Oar then the dues of Wardale may be supposed to arise to, or then an Equal share, with the said William Archer it is also further agreed that He the said William Archer shall put the said Mill in good repair so as to befitt for Smelting against the 1st day of January next In witness whereof Both partys have interchangeably sett their Hands the day and year above written.
