Copy of a Letter from a Gent. At Carlisle to Mr Tho. Simpson relating a French Prisoner

Sir

I was favoured with both your Letters but did not receive the first till Thursday Morning & tho’ I applied to the Town Mayor I could not find out the Gentleman till about an hour agoe, which was by the Help of Mr Coulthard under whose care he is at present.

He says that he Received the Two Guineas about a month since and Wrote to his Friend to Acknowledge it and Apply’d for some more & Mr Hodgshon says that he sent the Rect. To Mr Wallis at Newcastle. Major Cliff says that the Commissioners ordered three pence a day to be deducted out of every mans pay till the Expence of taking and bringing them to Carlisle should be reimbursed which will be near a year, so that he has Three pence a day for his Subsistance. He says that he laid out the Two Guineas in Britches & Shirts and is in Great Necessity for more as he lost most of his cloaths when he attempted to Escape. His Dress seems very shaby and he is in a very poor state of Health. By my Interpreter tells me his relations are very rich. He is released from Prison on Accot. of his bad Health
Undated copy letter and appears to be in response to enquiries made by Simpson in respect of his 2 letters from Walton on 14th and 18th December. Mention of Thursday suggests 20th December. Since the copy letter is entered in the volume after 26 Dec entries, a date is used her of Dec 27th.
