								Hexham July 29th. 1799

Sir,

Being an entire stranger to you, my present Address demands from me an Apology, which I flatter myself your Candour will admit & your Goodness will excuse.

Mr Flemming having appointed me Curate of this Town, I have for some time past had it in Contemplation to offer myself a Candidate for the Appointment of Master of the Grammar School of Queen Elizabeth in Hexham, now vacant. I have long been in the habit, & am at this Moment employed as a Teacher of Youth in the various Branches of Literature with Credit (I hope) to myself & Benefit to my Pupils. I should be happy to be honoured with your Patronage & Support on the present Occasion, for whatever Reason I may have to flatter myself with the partiality of many of the Governors, I conceive it my Duty to forbear any Application to them until I shall meet with your Approbation - permit me therefore, Sir, to solicit your Recommendation, which shall ever be my Study to deserve, and believe me, with the highest Deference of Respect.

Sir Your hble & Obedt. Servant

      Thos. Scurr

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
