To Mr Thomas Simpson Ravensworth Castle Decem. 14 1759
The Rec[eive]ers for the Derwentwater Estates recd. a Letter dated the 13 of November last from a Gentleman at Greenwich directing Two Guineas to be paid to one Mr Grenier a French Prisoner at Carlisle & in Goal there & also to enquire what allowance is made him p day. I presume this Mr Grenier is one of those that attempted to make his escape from Penrith, & by what the Gentleman writes the Receivers, the allowance made him at Carlisle in Gaol is only Threepence instead of Sixpence p. day. Mr Ogle Wallis Mercht. in Newcastle sent the Two Guineas to one Mr Thomas Hodshon at Carlisle, with a Letter to M. Grenier to whom Mr Hodshon was desired to pay the Two Guineas, & Enquire into the Complaint as to the Allowance, since which no answer can be got from Mr Hodshon. I must therefore desire you will get some friend of yours at Carlisle to call upom Mr Hodshon & know of him what he has done with the Two Guineas & that you will desire your friend to see Mr Grenier & know of him if he has reced it, & that he will be informed as to the allowance & lett me know how the whole stands as soon as you can. I am sorry to give you this trouble but hope you will excuse it & am with Compliments to your Family
Sir Your most Hble Servt
