Messrs. Mulcaster Farnacres 7th. January 1787

We have recd. your Letters of the 4th. & 5th. Inst and are glad the Lead Carriage is fixed for either Dukes Hall or Newcastle as that was our intention tho’ we believe Mr. Walton as he wrote in a hurry might say Newcastle without mentioning Dukes Hall. We approve of yr. Letting the Ore & Black Slag Tails you mention at the rate of Eight Guineas per Fodder of Lead. He to pay Smelters Wages & we to find Mill Room & Fuel. The sooner you do this the better. There is no occasion to weigh the Kiln Tools. We cannot possibly give directions for any Lead whatever to be delivered from the Mill till the whole of the Lead is got to the Lead Yard, & you must send us an Acct. how much Lead has been delivered to each Carrier at the Mill site the last Lead Carriage Pay. You don’t say anything about the Pig of Lead that was found at Corbridge. We are

      Your Humble Servts.

      Walton & Turner

PS. We find that Wm. Bell and Robt. Wilson are each a Pig short at Dukes Hall.

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
