Messrs. Mulcaster Farnacres 6th. November 1785

We have recd. your Letter of this Day and thank you very heartily for your attention to the matter as to the Poor Rate and Mr. Thorntons critical state of health & fear the worst as to him. We are much concerned on Account of the works being so much retarded by the Wet Weather but hope some progress has been made as to the Stamp Mill Wheel hole. What you have to say on the subject as to <dispensing> as well as you can ‘till Spring is certainly right. We very much approve of employing Wm. Forster and are sorry that there seems so great a probability of our having occasion for a further person in lieu of Francis Carr. Unless he himself shd. apply to go to the Infirmary we cannot move as to that and indeed we doubt that he is not a proper subject for admission. We are

PS. Under the circumstances of Mr. Thorntons severe attack we have thought it necessary to send Mr. Farrer, sooner indeed than we could well spare him, to endeavour to get Thorntons accounts settled wth. the Workmen & have our fears on this head.

I have been trying and can safely take my Oath as to the matter that Stublick Colliery in the 4 ½ years ending at Mich[aelma]s 1785, reckoning from 12th May 1781 half year, has not made more Profit to Greenwich Hospital than £20. 10 - per Ann. The real Sum, unless I have made an error which I do not think I have, is £20. 8. 9 ½ per Ann. I intend to go through this account again but I do not think I shall find any error unless it may be to reduce the annual Profit.
