Messrs. Mulcaster Farnacres 6th. June 1783

We have recd. yours of the 3rd inst and approve of what you have done as to the Sacks wch. went to Alston, but we are totally dissatisfied as to your Order of the 3rd. of June to Mr. Harbottle, not on account of the Quantity, but you were told you might order what Quantity you would and we wd. pay for it; instead of this you order 14 Bolls. and send ready Money for 2, and Sacks for it & 2 Bolls. more, but that you had <desired> Mr. Harbottle to give you Credit for 10 Bolls. of Rye and 10 new Sacks, and that it is Chiefly for Thomas Temperleys Men. Perhaps the whole of the above may be entirely intelligible to you; but it wd. have been quite as clear if you had wrote to the following effect and kept the Money in your Pockets.

We have this Day wrote to Mr. Harbottle desiring him to send us 14 Bolls. of Rye & 10 new Sacks.

In this way you might have settled your own Accts. with those people who were to have the Rye & Sacks, & the very first time we see Mr. Harbottle, we will make him return your ready Money by the same <Hands> he recd. it from. We do not mean by this to discourage you from sending for Corn, but merely to keep the Account clear, for we shall charge you with <all> the Money we pay, and then it will be only necessary for you to understand the Accts. you have with <B&L.g ….. situations less> may happen to us by paying for the Corn and Sacks for as to the carriage that will be <eventually> in your <….> hands, in <….. ….> of a List <………….> desire it may be considered <Mr> Johnson & <Parrett are …… ….. > farthing more than <13d> p Boll to Langley Mill

We have recd the Operations and are

      Your Hble Servts.

      Walton & Turner

A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
