Messrs. Mulcaster Farnacres 4 Jan. 1785

We have recd. yours of the 1st. & 5th, inst and very much approve of what you have been doing concerning the Lead Carriage, and desire that neither Wm. Bell nor Wm. Havelock may have any more Lead from Langley Mill on any account whatever, and with regard to Johnson & Corbett at your convenience you may acquaint them that we think they have used us very improperly, but we shall excuse them if they continue to behave well for the time to come, and as Mr. Chris Bell shall have behaved so well, we beg he may be supplied as far as you can do it to suit his Occasions. Thomas Robson, for the reasons you have given, seems also to be a proper person to be encouraged. This we think is all that is necessary for the present as to the Lead Carriage.

We are very sorry to see that you are so distressed by the Weather. We have for sev[era]l Days past had a gentle Thaw, and it is now raining. The Tops of the Ridges are, in many places, quite bare, and we are told that near the Sea in several places there is no snow at all, and particularly near Widdrington Castle we are told they have been plowing for Ten Days past. The Instance you give as to the Sheep is a very extraordinary one.

As to the Cash wch. you have, we have no doubt of your care of it, and dare say it will be perfectly safe in your Custody. We are

      Your Hble Servts

      Walton & Turner

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
