Messrs. Mulcaster Farnacres 28 Nov. 1785

We this Afternoon recd. your Letters of the 23rd. & 27 Inst both under the same Cover, and are very much surprised by the friendly Intimation you have given respecting James Watson and Wm. Wilson the Carrier. We cannot help thinking that Watson has behaved extremely ill in never mentioning the matter before. It is impossible for us to enter into it further than to say we will never employ Wilson again unless he clears up this matter, and accounts fairly with James Watson. Wilson has always been paid for carriage according to the Number of feet of Timber and Number of Deals contained in Watson’s own Estimates, and if he did not bring so much Wood and so many Deals as were set down in the Estimates, the Buildings must have wanted the necessary Quantities of those Articles to enable Watson to do the work, so that how Watson can want 168 feet of Timber & 40 Deals and after all have finished our Buildings is quite a Mystery to us. There is no way we can account for this but one. If Watson set down more Timber than he had occasion for for our Buildings, and Wilson has cheated him out of 168 ft. of Timber and 40 Deals part of his, Watson’s overcharges, it seems a proper punishment to the man, but if he has embezzled the Wood & Deals from Watson, the Timber & Deals being his own Property and not for our Buildings, it is a matter entirely between the two. You will be so good as to write to Wilson and let him know the Consequence if he does not settle this matter wth. Watson and we are

      Your Hble Servts.
