Messrs. Mulcaster Farnacres 27th. May 1784

We have received your Letters of the 19th. & 20th. of this Month by which we are particularly obliged and thank you for the sentiments you have so fully expressed respecting the Lead Carriages. On considering that subject we are perfectly satisfied that we could get the Lead carried more advantageously to Lemmington than to Newburn and that wd. be more convenient for all the Country Carriers than going to Newburn even if the price delivered at Throckley by the side of the Military Road was no more than Tenpence a piece from the Mill to Throckley, but tho’ our thoughts are as above and we could even do without any of the Hexham Carriers yet we wish not to lay ourselves under the necessity of applying for liberties from his Grace the Duke of Northumberland which would on being carried into execution effectually prevent any more Lead being carried to Newburn & probably put an end to the Hexham Carriers ever being employed in case they shd. act improperly upon the present occasion for our wish is that after all the carriage should go on in the same Hands it has done and therefore if you can contrive to get Thomas Ions and his Son to come to Farnacres and make an Apology and to request to be again employed with assurances of better behaviour for the time to come we shall certainly forgive what is past and order the Lead to go in the same Channels it has hitherto done otherwise we shall for the present abide by the determination made at the last pay. When we find a Man attempts to crush Wm. Pattinson he will most likely make a Net to catch himself in and surely as far as in our power will meet with his desserts. It will be well for you to give hints of this sort if you shd. find that to be necessary.

With regard to the Turnpike that to the Lime Kiln is the most necessary and we shd. be glad not to be disappointed to have that done this Season and desire Pattinson may be contracted with for it on the best Terms you can. We will engage that his Lead shall be taken from him at least at Hexham. With respect to the other Road it is most undoubtedly proper that it shd. be done but desire that the part on the Common only may be done this Season; you will therefore also let that on the best Terms you can and if it shd. be thought proper after this time to have the other done to the Barn End this Season we will give you further directions. The prices offered seem not out of the way.

If any of the Hexham Carriers refuse taking Lead from the Country Carriers at Hexham as usual let us know immediately.

The heightening of the Wall you mention and the Building of the Wall at the Lime Kilns may be postponed ‘till we are on the spot.

We are very glad the Ore Carriage is begun and desire you’ll begin the delivery of the Lead at the Mill immediately.

It will most assuredly be proper to get the Tails of the Black Slags worked up as also the poor Ore Tails & therefore you will contract with the Man you speak of. We are

      Yours &tc

      W&T

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
