Messrs Mulcaster Farnacres 26 May 1787.

We have rec[eive]d your letter of the 23rd and are sorry to see the difficulty that you have laboured under in getting the Litharge Casks filled and assure you that unless we can have this business so contrived as to keep you and the workmen clear of the difficultys you mention we shall drop it and by way of relieving you from the trouble of getting it in at the Bung we see there will be no way that can be depended upon but taking out the end of the Cask as no Bung can we think be made big enough either on the side or end of the Cask. This however shall be further considered & we will drop the whole business rather than run the risque of destroying your health and that of those we employ.

It would be a very agreable thing to <….> have all the Litharge Slags and Test Bottoms Smelted in future with the same kind of Black Slags <p.. pay … …. Away ..ffant> that the Litharge Slags were lately fluxed with in making the Experiment of what Quantity of Lead might be contained in the Litharge Slags; that it will be necessary to by an Experiment or two whether our doing so will be attended with loss or not and therefore we desire that a Quantity of Litharge Slags and Test Bottoms may be weighed over taken weigh for weigh, so that the quality of the Two Parcels, each of which must be sufficient for a full Shift, may be as near alike as possible and to Tryall one Parcel with Common Black Slags and the other with Lead Slag and to take notice whether any more <Cinders> are created in one Operation or the other. The Black Slags of neither kind need not be weighed. We are

       Your Humble Servants

       Walton & Turner

PS As soon as the order for Mr Fishwick is completed you must write and give us an Account of the whole Quantity sent away from the Mill <and on what Days>. The first 16 cwt does not come within the last order from Mr Fishwick and therefore he is to have 30 times 5 cwt beside the 16 & then stop.

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
