Messrs. Mulcaster Farnacres 12 April 1785

I have recd. your Letter of the 11th. inst with the Copy of mine as to Mr. Jobling & Co. beginning the use of the Hearth at the Low Mill, and approve of what you have done therein.

The Sketches which Mr. Walton gave Mr. Jobling were merely with a View to put you upon thinking, and neither of them will answer; but as we are to be at Langley Mill on the 22nd. inst we shd. be glad that you wd., one of you, come down & see Mr. Holier’s Furnaces before that time. Mr. Walton Senr. thinks a Bar resting at each end upon a flat piece of Iron will be the best formed thus [image here] in the part where the fire lyes, and made so as to admit of being moved sideways at one side of the Grate, but cast so at the other end as when they are laid parallel to each other, they will be at a proper Distance for allowing the Ashes to fall thro’.

With regard to the carriage of Materials we can by no means enter into Contracts yet, but as to the Carriage of the Wood which has been cut in the Hospital’s Woods, it must be got to Langley Mill as soon as possible, and, whoever carries it, the settling of the price must be left to Mr. Turner and me, or myself, and therefore Mr. Thornton or any Body else who may be employed in the carriage of it. I am

      Your Hble Servt.

      Nich. Walton Junr.

PS. Pray send for Mr. Thornton or one of you go to him with the inclosed.

George Moore of Finney hall in the Parish of Allendale has proposed for Netherholmes Farm if you know anything of him we shd. be glad to be informed by Letter when Mr. Thornton comes here on Friday.
