To Mr Spedding Keswick April the 26 1759

Dear Sir

I am just come from Thornthwaite, where I reced. a Letter from Mr Griffiths in which he desires the price of the ore may be fixed according to other Markets. I have given your Agent Mr Goose a memorandum which will enable you to make out the Account & the price is also fixed according to the prices we sold for in those years, when the Account is made out you will deduct the payment to Mr Boag & send me a Bill for the remainder.

The short Levell you propose to drive for the Convenience of Drawing out your Ore etc might be very proper, if you had no other intention but that of making the most of it to that Levell, but as I apprehend your Company are engaged with the Hospital to drive a Levell Ten Fathoms under the lowest workings in the Mine it seems to me unnecessary.

I submit this to your judgement & only have to observe that if the Mines were my own, I would certainly at once Drive the Low Levell; especially as the additional Length will not very greatly Increase the Expense, I mean the Levell from the Allders in a direct Line to the best part of your prospect under Levell. You will hear from me as to the Boyler when I get home, in the mean time I am

      Sir Your Most Hble. Servt.

      Nichos. Walton
Probably James, one of the sons of Carlisle Spedding (1695-1755) once agent for the Lowther estate and mining entrepreneur.
