Mr Boag Rav. Castle January 9 1759

My sentiments as to what is to be done at Scremerston you must know, but as you desire it in your Letter of the 6 Inst, I shall repeat, that I think the Hedges by the Turnpike Road sh’d be first done & that is probably all that can be done this Season. I think Machnabb a very proper person to inspect & have the direction of those Hedges, so as it does not put us to great Expense, wch I hope will not be as he is so frequently at Ancroft. You may therefore agree with him as moderately as you can. Let the Hedges be well done & with Expedition

It is highly probably the Board of Directors may consent that Mr Romer be released from the North Side of Scremerston but if they doe it must be by application properly made to them & not by any consent of ours. I shall readily Joyn with you in doing Captain Romer any Service I can therein, but he must at present rest Matters as they are & either perswade Thos. Ewart to stay another Year, or Lett his farm as he shall think proper, in which he will run very little Risqu as he is upon the Spot & need not lett the Tenant be more than halfe a years Rent in Arrears. Pray let the Buildings be carefully viewed, that we may not hereafter be complained of for Insufficiency. I have had some hints that there is some faults in the Jams of the Doors etc. I begg my Complem’ts and my Sons to Capt. Romer.

I am afraid the Tenants at Middletonhall will labour under great difficultys, & being orderly people are Entitled to some help from the Hospital. You will therefore consider what would be most useful to them, & of future benefit to the Hospital; & know the Expense of it for our consideration I am

      Your Hb Servt

      Nichs. Walton
