Dear Sir	Your letter of the 4th Instant was delivered to me by Messrs Cooper Narner & Masterman of the Lead Co. I was sorry to find that you have no thoughts of purchasing Bacons Moiety of the Partnership L[ead] Mines in Weardale; after what I had said in my former letters in accommendation of your having the whole of those Mines in your own hands it was needless for me to say any thing more on the subject, & as your Lead Agents declined setting a Value on those Mines I could not pretend to do it _ I did not attend the Sale but was inform’d that Bacons Agent on finding that you did not intend bidding (with the consent of Messrs Cooper etc) postpon’d the Sale until the next spring, the Lead Co engaging to attend the sale _ I had some conversation with Messrs Cooper & Co on this matter & find that they are very desirous of purchasing the Moiety in conjunction with you which they would prefer to having the whole Moiety themselves, as by that means they are more certain of working those Mines with them _ I must say that it was my wish that you had become the Owner of the whole, but as it did not meet with your approbation, & after what you have said to Messrs Cooper & Co I do not think that you can with propriety bid for the whole & I think that the only matter for your consideration at present is, whether you will in conjunction w[i]th the Lead Co purchase the Moiety or have nothing further to do with it _ Mr Ball & Mr Forster are well acquainted with this matter to whome I refer you for further information _ Inclosed I send you Eden Ridley & Cos Bill on Castell & Co at a Month for £2000 the Recipt of which you will please to acknowledge I am etc J.E.B

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
