Saturday 25th



Received a Letter from the Revd Mr Gipps, Vicar of Corbridge, soliciting assistance on building a School at Corbridge, which Letter I am requested to lay before the Commissioners. I regret to remark that in Corbridge many of its inhabitants are poor, ignorant & profligate & that any attempt to elevate them in morality & intelligence deserves encouragement.  To contribute the Wood for the Building, as Mr Gipps suggests, would be an easy mode of assisting it, for the Hospital, & equally useful as money. [marginal note: ‘would certainly [missing] £20 or £30 [missing] necessary’] The River being now very low, I went with Mr Hunt on foot and examined all the Shores & foundations of the Embankment, which were not accessible at the time of repairing the great breach made by a Flood early in the year.  We found some slips in different parts that must now be remedied, & places that require to be strengthened in the Stone breast work.  The necessary repair at present will not be great, but it requires constant attention, as the smallest breach if neglected may in the event of a Flood lead to serious mischief.
