The Honble The Governor & Company Nenthead July 18th 1815

Sirs

After the Closest inspection and general View of the Company’s Mines under my Care on the 26th: 27th & 28th past I lett the Sundry Bargains, a list of which is annexed. The prices being Reduced, and Mines in general poor; naturally reduces the Number of hands, and it is certain, under unfavourable times, it militates much against the interest of Lead Mines to have them crowded & overloaded with Numbers

Rampgill Mine continues to Raise a considerable quantity of Ore, yet it is far short of what it formerly was. Robt Readshaw &c are raising in one of the Cross Veins, & will probably Raise Ore shortly. Wm. Irwin &c are driving the deep Horse Level which is a general convenience to all the Veins, and the only passage for bringing out the Ore & Rubbish. Hugh Spotiswood &c are cutting a Cross from the upper Level about 20 Fathms and will then sink into the deep Level, to ensure a general communication of fresh Air, and to try for Ore in the Stratums between the two Levels. Robt Houps &c are driving an upper Level where we expect to cut a successful Vein; Thomas Hewitson & are driving in the late successful Vein forehead, with an expectation of meeting with Ore again, by the scattered parts of the Vein uniting

Smallcleugh Mine <&c> Flatts are doing well. Matt Vickers &c are driving the Level in the Flatts, as the only waygate for the Workmen to & from their respective Workings and a passage for the Horses & Waggons, to bring the Ore and Rubbish out of the Mine Josh. Spark &c are driving the deep Level, from the Engine to relieve the Middle Cleugh Veins Jno Thompson &c are sinking a Sump from the Horse Level to the Engine Level for the accomodation of fresh Air, & to try the Vein in the Several Stratums.

MiddleCleugh Cross Vein as connected with Blackashgill purchase is raising Ore pretty well. Wm Teasdale &c are opening and Repairing an Old Level. Jon.a Houps &c are sinking a Sump into the Vein and will, I trust shortly raise Ore Jno Milburn &c are driving the Horse Level.

Scaleburnmoss is much the same as last Report, Edward Robson &c are driving the Horse Level. The is little Alteration with

Middle Cleugh since my last Report. Ridley Robson &c are sinking into the Vein, & will soon prove its success. Geo: Robinson &c are driving the Horse Level.

At Hangingshaw Mine Jno Hall &c are driving a Level in the Great Limestone to prove the Vein in the same.

At Goodhamgillmoss & Broomsberry. Wm Armstrong &c are sinking a Sump to produce fresh Air, & try the Vein in the Great Limestone

Middlehope Mine is doing well. Edward Byers &c are driving the Horse Level which is difficult to move, the Limestone Rock being prodigious hard. Wm Brown &c are driving an upper Level in the Vein, to try the same in the upper Stratums, where we expect Ore will be found. Geo Temperly &c are driving an higher Level in the side of the Mountain and by sinking will lay the Vein open in all the different Stratums between the Surface and the deep Horse Level. John Armstrong &c are driving a Level westward, which is a proper mode, & highly necessary for proving the Vein as they go on. We are still picking the remains of the Ore out of

Ireshopeburn Vein which is very poor at 50/- p[er] Bing, but as there is no other expence upon the Mine, it will pay & make some profit

Stanhopeburn Mine is much the same, but the Dead Expence being light will be saved from loss this Year. Jos Collingwood &c are driving the Horse Level. Jno Elliott &c are driving the Horse Level at

Blackashgill upon the Little Limestone, and which will try the Vein in the different Stratums as they proceed, by cutting a Cross to the Vein & Sinking

Browngill Sun Vein is poor and can barely be kept going with the present prices for Raising the Ore, but shall be frugally conducted Robt Bowman &c are cutting a Cross from the Old Vein to a Strong String 15 fa[thoms] to the South, which probably will raise Ore. John Archer &c are driving an upper Horse Level, to prove the Vein and several Strings in the upper Stratums

Tynebottom favourable prospects is at present gone off, & tends to show the fluctuating uncertainty of some Lead Mines. Wm Parmerly &c are driving in the Vein which Recently looked well, with an expectation of the same Reviving Adam Walton &c are driving the Horse Level

Browngill Mine is poor and employs few hands. Thos Cain &c are driving the Horse Level in the Great Limestone to open the Vein for trial. I am informed that two Commissioners and the Secretary from Greenwich Hospital Board will be in this Country next Week

I am Sirs Your most hble Servt.

      Thomas Dodd Senr.

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
