Letter – Nicholas Walton to William Corbett – 18 Jan 1740

	Inclosed we send you our Cash accot. for Lst month in which remains a ballance of £434:8:10 ¼  in favour of the Hospitall.

	We reced. yours wth the boards minutes of the 19 Dec last which we duly observe & since we reced. the same we have pursuant to the Boards order Lett the following farms viz:

Lett Mr Thomas Westgarth Greymare Colliery for one yr from Mayday next at £39;  Lett Geo: Blackburn Nether holmes for one year from Mayday next at 5s.5  Lett Jas. Thompson Dilston Hall & Gardens for one yr from Mayday next at £6. & we hope soon to Lett Lorbottle Tyths & Throckly Mill for one year also.

	Inclosed you will Reced. a form of an Advertizement for Letting on Leas the above mentioned farms wch Shou’d be Incerted in the London Gazett the week before Lady day next so as the day of Letting may be fixed to be upon Michms Day following.

	In obedience to the Boards Commands we begg leave to acquaint them that we think Mr Simpson will deserve three Guinis for making the Coppy of the Grand Indenture to the Tennants of Keswick & the other Indentures relating thereto.

	We send you Inclosed a Letter we have had from Mr Shaftoe Downd attorney at Law in Hexham as also his bill of law Charges occasioned by an assault on Mr Bunting in the Execution of his Office which we thought proper to defend altho we never troubled the Board with it as we Intended first to see the Issue the assault arise from one Abraham Teasdale hindering us from making a Dam for Whittley mill in a place where we had an undoubted right which Mr Bunting by our Direction insisted upon & Executed the work accordingly which so Inraged Mr Teasdale that a Fray Ensued & upon that the action was Commenced & made its progress in the manner Mr Downs setts forth to which Letter we begg leave to referr. The Expence is a great one being a suit Commenced without the Boards order is what we have no right to Claime however as it was Supporting Mr Buntings Authority & the Right of the Hospital we hope the Board will allow of it & that they will be so good as order it to be paid to Mr Downs who is on every occasion a Ready Suport of the Hospitals Interest when ever it is in his power.

	Yesterday 21 of the Last Leases were signed & the rest will be signed in a Small time So that the sooner the rest is dispatched the better & we are

Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich March 22d 1739



Whereas by an Act of Parliament passed in the 8 Year of the Reign of his present Majesty for the application of the Rents and Proffits of the Estates forfeited by the Attainder of James Earl of Derwentwater & Chas. Radcliffe it is inabled among other things that the Commissioners or Governours of his Majestys Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich are to give Six Months previous Notice in the London Gazette of the time & place when and where such Estates are intended to be Lett: Notice is therefore hereby given by us the Commissioners of Greenwich Hospital that on Monday the 29 of September Next at Salters Hall in London will be Lett on Lease for 21 years: a Farme at Netherholmes in Hexhamshire, late in the possession of Joseph Armstrong, Dilston Hall and Gardens now in the possession of James Thompson: Grey Mare Colliery, within the Manour of Newlands now in the possession of Joseph McKelly:  Throckley Mill in the Manour of Throckley near Newburne now in the possession of Rob. Weldon; And Lorbottle Tithes near Rothberry, now in the possession of Wm.Storey. All in the County of Northumberland, belonging to the Said Estates: And all persons are desired to give in their Proposals in writing directed to Wm Corbett Esqr at the Pay Office in Broad Street London, or to Messrs walton & Boag at Ravensworth Castle near Durham.
