Messrs Walker Fishwick & Co. Farnacres 4th December 1787.

Gents

We are not a little surprised and indeed hurt on hearing this day from Langley Mill that instead of Casks being sent with the Bungholes in the end we have been sent with Bungholes in the side. It is a matter of more consequence to us to attend to the preservation of the Lives of our Agents at Langley Mill and our Workmen there than any dealing with you Gentlemen can compensate for and therefore unless the Terms of Agreement relative to the Casks can be complied with we dare it may be at an end and you must allow us to think that our wishes have not been attended to in that way which we had a right to expect from your assurances and cannot possibly persuade ourselves that it is otherwise than that your directions having been misunderstood by your own Workmen. We shall be glad to hear from you by the bearer and are

       Gents Your most humble Servants

       Walton & Turner

PS If any more Casks should be sent with Bungholes in the sides we have given instructions that they shall not be filled

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
