Mr Richard Fishwick Farnacres 15th December 1787.

Sir

We have received your favor of the 14th and should have been glad to accommodate you with 60 or 80 Fodders more of Litharge but doubt our Quantity of Ore at the Lead Mill will not admit of our furnishing you with much more than the 60 Fodders agreed for as some of the Ore produces Lead which will not bear the Expence of Refining now when Lead bears so high a Price. We will however consult with our Agents at the Lead Mill and if we find we can furnish 60 or 80 Fodders beside the 60 Agreed for we shall be glad to do so only we must be allowed such Time for the delivery as that we can have opportunity of getting Carriers and you may be assured we shall not delay the delivery. It is much wished that the Bungs might be as near the Centre of the Cask Heads as possible and that all holes in the Staves of which the Casks are made should be carefully <filled up>. This we suppose Mr Mulcaster will have <emphasised fully> as we directed him to call upon you on Thursday Morning last Week.

       Sir, Your most Humble Servants

       Walton & Turner

PS We have ordered Mr Mulcaster to endeavour to engage more Carriage Men. The moment we hear from the Lead Mill you shall have a positive answer as to what Quantity of Litharge further we can furnish you with. It has been and is our wish to receive the Casks at the Lead Mill faster than the Carriers can take them away because when it is stowed in the Casks it is out of the way of our other Work which it is necessary to go on with.

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
