Messrs Mulcaster, Farnacres 2nd November 1787. ½ past 6
We have this moment received your Letter of the 30th Ult and are rather in a difficulty what to say about the Carriers asking or rather demanding an advance of Price, we are however absolutely determined not to pay one farthing advance for the Time that was passed when they mentioned this matter which was upon the 30th of October and whether we should agree to give any advance or not after their Pay is the only object in view. If the Carriers will continue going as long as they do go after the 30 October and behave themselves properly, that shall be taken into consideration and we will make them some allowance for continuing till we are enabled to get the weighed over Ore to Langley Mill but in case the Weather should prove so unseasonable as that the Galloways will be likely to receive injury by continuing to go, we do hereby impower you to allow the Carriers to stop whensoever you see proper. If 6d per Bing addition will content them & they will not leave the consideration to us you may agree with them but not to go one moment back from the Time they mentioned the business to you.
You may send off the Litharge which is put up for Mr Fishwicks Casks and the sooner the better. He agrees to take it. We are
Your Humble Servants

PS If the Carriers should prove refractory you may tell them they had but take care how they behave as perhaps they may not have such a good day for the Pay as they have been used to if they behave improperly but this do as from yourselves.
If we can avoid an addition of price to the Carriers we should like it much but as it is our wish to get as much Ore as possible we would rather give even 9d per Bing than stop, and the Weather has really been so bad that they will deserve something for continuing to go.
