Messrs Mulcaster, Farnacres 16th July 1787.

We are exceedingly sorry to acquaint you that the Cake of Silver before the last that was sent from Langley Lead Mill was not so fine as it ought to have been. Mr Holmes has fully explained this matter to us so as to convince us of the fact, & says that he has always used it as an Argument for when he sells our Silver, that it must be perfectly fine and so should it. Mr Holmes further says I must now beg favor of you to desire your people at the Refinery to be very careful in making the Silver fine, for if it is not, it will very much discourage the sale of it. We are

       Your H[umb]le Serv[ants]

       Walton & Turner

PS. Mr Walton desires that Wm. Dixon & his partner will say at once whether they propose doing anything further at West Heugh – and you will be so good as let us know their Determination as soon as possible.

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
