Messrs Mulcaster Farnacres 13th May 1787.

I got home this Day against Dinner and had the pleasure to find all well at home. On my arrival here I met with your Letters of the 8th and 10th Inst containing the Assays from the following kinds of Lead.

	No of Assays

1st May. 2. Scaleburn Moss Ore Lead

         2. String of Middle Cleugh Sun Vein <.>

Query which Sun Vein & whether North or Sun Vein

              String to that Sun Vein

7th May 2. Scaleburn Moss Slag Lead

         2. Rampgill Slag Lead

         2. Lough vein Lead

The Assays from Rampgill Ore Lead did not come in the Letter.

It will if we can make a full agreement with Rbt. Fishwicks Co. be worth while perhaps to go <nearer> in Refining than we have hitherto done because if we should contract with that Co. to take all our litharge except the Rich Litharge it w[ould]d be worth while to be content with fewer ounces of Silver if we can sell all our Litharge. [underlined:’ This to yourselves.’] Fishwick & Co. can take it all & have offered to do so.

In addition to what you propose, we desire you will not only weigh the Litharge of this Week but the Litharge Slags, of course the Refined Lead will be weighed.

Upon enquiring at Hexham I found that no Casks had come either by Johnson or Corbett for Litharge so I suppose Robt Fishwicks Co. are getting proper Casks made and will send them when they are ready. You may fill the Two Casks of theirs now at the Mill or rather we would have you put <7cwt.4.0> into each of those Casks & you may send them off directed to Messrs Walkers Fishwick and Co. at the Lead Wharf at Skinnerburn, as soon as convenient. Mark the weight of each Cask at one end before any Litharge is put in and on the other end of each <with> Litharge in it.

I am just now favoured with you Letter about Plankey Mill, & am obliged by the attention to that Business. I am

       Yours etc N Walton

P.S. I shall be glad to pay every Regard to your Opinion as to Elliot’s Successor.

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
