Letter – Nicholas Walton to John Maule – 11 Jul 1740

      Ravensworth Castle July 11.1740

To Mr Maule



Dear Sir

      We Reced. Yours in due Course dated the 5th July Inst. which gave us great pleasure to find the accot. as sent you ending the 30 June 1739 has been approved of, & in Regard to those Articles which Mr Hunter desires to have Explained we give you the following Explanations, sett oposite to your Querys.





[Query:] Corbridge Estate the reason of your Charging your Selves with £1 for distraining Mrs Horsmans

Goods, & whether the sum is not included in the £3-5 Standing out against her in the Supers.



[Answer:] Corbridge estate. The Reason why we Charge ourselves with the £1 for destraining Mrs Horsmans Goods, is that she is lyable to pay the Charge wth the Arrear of Rent into which it is Included as appears by what follows

Cash reced. in pt. 11 June 1739 being

[Q:] Thomas Errington Esqr. 2 ¼ Yrs R<ent> Short Charged to Mayd<ay> 1737 in Aldston Manor 

Qry why you do not Charge your Seleves with the Rent to Mart<inma>s 1738 as the other Rents are & if not reced. the Ten[an]t to be sett in Super



[A:] Thomas Errington Esqr. was omitted in the Arrears return’d to us & not discovered by us till about Mayday 1737, so that we for that Reason charge our Selves with 2 ¼ Yrs Rent from Martinmas 1734to Mayday 1737 as a Short Charge & from Mayday 1737 it is charged in the Rentalls to Martinmas 1738 which makes his whole Arrears to Martinmas 1735 £2  Agreeable to the return made thereof by us, as you will observe by the Accot. we sent you.





[Q:] The £2 Deducted out of the Ballance for Broxfield Tyth which appears to the Auditor o be a Charge instead of a Deduction And in what estate does it lye, want Explanation



[A:] The £2 deducted out of the ballance was done with a designe to make the ballance Correspond with our Cash accot. Sent o the Board, that Sum having beed reced.for a years Rent of Broxfield Tyths due at Mayday 1739, whereas the Rents in the Accots. Sent you are only Carryd to Martinmas 1738. So that if i be no way necessary to make the ballanced agree it ought not to be any way taken Notice of as it will come into Next Years Accot. Broxfield Tyth is Included in the Rentall in Meldon and Appurtenances.





[Q:] Castlerigg Derwentwater & Thornthwaite the Number of the Tenants that are Indebted the Sum of £162.12.6 Customary Rents & what part of that sum has been Reced. Since this accot. which is now so pending	 



[A:] It woud be endless to numerate all the Tenants which Stand in arrears & make up the Sum of £162.1.6 as you may please to observe by the Rental  There has been reced. Since that time to the 30 June 1740 £157.19.9d of that Sum and then remained due from 13 Tenants only £4.12.9d  



We have now Ready our Accot. made out to the 30 June 1740 so as to Send you it Imediatly; so that we woud be glad to Receive that from you as Soon as possable  & likewise we desire you will Lett is know whether we need to send that accot. Ending 30 June 1740 to you before we make the Affadavitts. It is made Exactly agreeable to that you have & will be Altered in any Article to Correspond with that we receive approved of by the Aud<it>or from you. And pray are we to Send them to the Board or to you. please to take Mr Hunters Directions in this.
