Mr John Holmes Farnacres 24th July 1787.

Dear Sir,

We are very much concerned to hear of the Cake of Silver sent from Newcastle the 6th of last month not proving so fine as it ought to have been. We immediately wrote to our people at the Refinery who have promised to be careful, and say that at all times they realy are so, but that in some instances near the time of the taking off a Cake of Silver some of the Clay drops out of the Joints between the Bricks from the Roof of the Furnace which discolour the upper surface of the Cake of Silver, and while they admit that both Cakes of Silver last sent were neither of them fine in the Sale, but believe the refiners of that <…. …..> of the Silver which had become a little dirtied wd been found quite trifling. [2 lines blurred and now illegible] proves so fine as it ought to be, we shall be ready and willing to make any proper allowances.

We have this Day drawn you for £235.17.3 being Balance of the Acc[oun]t after Reduction £20.10.4 which you are desired to be so good as Pay Richd. Probert as per Acc[oun]t of particulars as on the other side.
