Mr Hunter Dukesfield Newcastle 14th Septr 1795

Sir	I rec[eive]d your Letters of the 27th Ulto & 9th Inst & observe the Contents. I was mistaken as to a Monthly Account being sent from Rookhope Mill it was an Account at the end of the Year which you must be sensible will be very proper; You will observe by my letter to you that I took notice of the great quantity of the 8 Stone Lead that remained on the Road & desired that for the future some part of that Ore which was the poorest of Silver might be smelted into 11 Stone P[iece]s as by that means it would be more saleable & advantageous to the Concern; You are pleased to answer me, I have ordered all the Lead smelted at Rookhope Mill to be made 11 Stone p[iece]s for the future which the Carriage Men once they know (I doubt not) will take the advantage of; Is this Candid of You? the directions that you have given & the steps that you have taken respecting the repair of the Lead way were very proper. I observe that the great fall of Wood has been an impediment to your getting the Lead down, & that you are of opinion that an advance of the price of Carriage would not answer the purpose we wished & that some little Money on Account may have a better effect; whatever it may be thought adviseable to do should be carried into Execution before the Season breaks up & the roads be rendered almost impassable; Rookhope Mill being cleared is doing nothing if the Lead remains on the Road, so I beg that every means may be used to get it down I am Dr Sir Your H[um]ble Servant

                                                                                                           J E Blackett

I thank you for the brace of Moor Game

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
