Stone Surprise

A lovely surprise came from a neighbouring farmer yesterday. He arrived in his digger with two stones in the bucket which he’d had in safe keeping in his barn for nigh on 20 years! We think they’re two of the missing stones from the ledge around the left hand arch, and they have a beautiful curve and taper. Gary, the stonemason, was delighted to look over them. I wonder what other treasures will emerge over the coming months while the repairs and archaeology are taking place?

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
