To Mr William Dalton at Newcas[tle] 2nd Aug[u]st 1764

Sir I desire you will carefully consider once more the acco[un]t of your stock of Lead and Litharge remaining the 31 Dec[embe]r last. For I am sure you are still wrong and must have had more remaining than £37094.0s.14d for if you had not you have made a sad years work, and a waste of about 700 w[eigh]t of lead more than should have been in working the 8772 cwt 3q 0lb refined in the last year.

                                                                  cwt q lb

For you had remaining on the 31 Dec 1762 in lead & litharge 43641 0 14

Mr Reynaldson weighed to you in 1763 32325 3 0

                                                                75966 3 14

                                               cwt q lb

You delivered in 1763 in lead & lith[ar]ge 37930 3 7

& you say you only had on 31 Dec last 37094 0 14

                                                                75024 3 21

                        Wanting 941 3 21

The Waste in working 8772cwt 3q 0lb should not

Have exceeded (as so much has been sold in litharge) 400

From wch deduct the lead made by Chas

Allan on washing the slags 212 2 21

                                                                  187 1 7

So that there is a Deficiency, to be accounted for, of 754 1 14

Consider therefore whether you are not wrong in the 480 p[iece]s you reckoned it at first as part of your stock; but have left it out of the Acco[un]t you brought me last. Pray let me hear from you soon. I am etc H R

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
